Despite the name, it’s just outside the town of Puerto Natales—but a good two hours from Torres del Paine National Park.

Ideal for adventurers craving a unique basecamp in Chilean Patagonia, Remota is as striking for its design—by Chilean architect Germán del Sol, who also created the nearby Explora lodge—as for its comprehensive menu of activities. Guests can go for gentle walks and cave explorations, mountain bike past waterfalls and cliffs, fly-fish (the lodge is Orvis-endorsed), kayak past icebergs, or attempt a full-day summit of Cerro Castillo. They return to what looks like a plate-glass bunker, its walls coated with black asphalt and its roofs planted with grass (sustainability is a key design element). It sounds severe, but it’s really quite sophisticated, and the elemental design of the rooms—slate floors, slabs of untreated wood, colorful local textiles—warms things up. Of note: The rooms are all the same size and have no TVs (there is Wi-Fi).
