What it is

A stylish but private hotel in a low-key neighborhood.

What it isn't

Centrally located, especially for first-time visitors.

What we think

Better known as the hotel that Robert DeNiro owns, the Greenwich is a surprisingly low-key option in the interesting (but quiet) neighborhood of Tribeca. The hotel is very private and intimate, with only 88 rooms and suites and a small lobby (an additional drawing room and courtyard are reserved for guests only). The interiors reflect DeNiro's global travels: Moroccan tiles, Tibetan rugs, antique rice paddy hats, French provincial furniture. It's all authentic with a lived-in elegance, and the generously sized rooms convey a residential vibe. The basement pool is a quiet show-stopper: adjacent to the small spa, it's lit by lanterns and surrounded by wooden beams salvaged from a 250-year-old Japanese farmhouse. Another standout is Locanda Verde, which showcases chef Andrew Carmellini's deft hand with Italian cuisine.

You're here because

You appreciate a little privacy in a city that is so distinctly non-private.

The moment

In the brick-lined courtyard dripping with ivy, you take a bite of burrata from Locanda Verde and a sip of Verdicchio, enjoying the quiet retreat from the Manhattan thrum.
