A legend since the 1930s, with Thomas Keller's famed Surf Club restaurant and beachfront cabanas befitting Hollywood royalty both young and old.
Soulless. Yes, it’s been revamped, but beautifully so—it retains all the swagger that attracted former guests like Frank Sinatra, Winston Churchill and Elizabeth Taylor.
Some grande dames inevitably lose their luster, but never The Surf Club. Reimagined by Parisian starchitect Joseph Dirand with all the aesthetic thrills of yore but all the Instagrammability we’ve come to expect, the property is luring a new wave of glitterati. And what lures they are. A champagne bar and restaurant straight from Positano, Italy, complete with delizia al limone on the dessert menu? Check. A spa where therapists will anoint you with organic honey and coconut in the hammam? Check. A Mercedes-Benz SUV for zipping around Bal Harbour? But of course. The enormous guest rooms start at 600 square feet and are equally show-stopping, with nods to Deco in the marble and seafoam interiors and amenities Ms. Taylor would have loved, including a customizable Four Seasons Bed and movie star service (if you need a dress pressed and back in your arms within an hour, your wish is their command).
The spa is fitted with a tea room, marble hammam and treatments like The Floridian Body Scrub—made with organic sugar cane, orange oil and honey—that has you feeling like Carmen Miranda in the best possible way.
Thomas Keller doesn’t do “meh,” so when you saw his first ever Florida outpost was here at the nostalgic, 50’s-themed Surf Club Restaurant, your heart skipped a beat. Settled into a powder pink armchair makes your order, oysters rockefeller, Maine lobster thermidor and a side of candied bacon taste all the more cinematic. Is that a Michelin star you see, twinkling above the ocean? Or is that the 40-year-old Balvenie single malt whiskey talking?
