A legendary golf hideaway on SoCal’s lushest ocean-front cliffs, with an equally legendary spa.
Just about golf. Sure, the 36-hole course here has hosted the U.S. Open, but there’s plenty more on your to-do list here, including guided hikes through the adjacent reserve and al fresco yoga classes.
Design enthusiasts flock to the Lodge at Torrey Pines; each room is an ode to Craftsman-era grandeur, from the wood millwork to the tiled fireplaces and Stickley-inspired furniture (Sunset magazine touted it as the best hotel in the West for good reason). Even “starter” Signature Rooms are ginormous, at 500 square feet; all are fitted with marble bathrooms, outsized tubs and dreamy Egyptian cotton linens (ask for one with a private patio set along the botanical reserve). Repeat guests rave about the spa’s coastal sage scrub; you’ll feel brand new after being scoured with sea salt and sage, then sprayed by a five-head Vichy shower.
This being California, the locavore food is especially top notch, and this one’s A.R. Valentien restaurant has the added bonus of overlooking the seafoam blue Pacific Ocean. On the appetizer list? Applewood-smoked Ruby Trout and hand-rolled Garganelli pasta with lamb ragu. Come hungry.
After a sunny day on the links, you’re spent. Until, that is, you hit the spa here, slink around in a robe sipping California citrus-infused water, and await your “Spirit to Soul Ritual” orange peel body buff, massage and vitamin C facial. Soon, you’ll emerge from the chrysalis fresher than fresh.
