What it is

A design-forward 35-room hideaway with an Instagram famous staircase.

What it isn't

Hands off. All guests here are honored guests, and pampered with butler service, welcome refreshments and a complimentary wake-up complete with coffee, tea or a smoothie.

What we think

Aesthetes beeline to this Polanco district property for one big reason: it was designed by starchitects Yabu Pushelberg (a.k.a. the people behind some of Prada and Louis Vuitton’s most eye-popping storefronts). And it’s more than the rosewood staircase that snakes from floor to floor, although that is reason alone to stay here. Each room is fitted with goose down comforters, Italian linens by Rivolta Carmignani, custom rosewood furniture and dressing tables, BOSE surround sound theaters, and a remote control that allows you to brighten lights, draw the curtains, and more. Bathrooms are like your own private spa—think rain showers (with body sprays), whirlpool tubs fitted with aromatherapy and bidets by Japanese firm Toto. Perhaps most charmingly, guests pick their own handmade body soaps—each made of local ingredients—upon check-in, so you ensure a scent you love.

You're here because

None other than chef Martha Ortiz directs one of the on-site restaurants, Dulce Patria, where dishes look like edible Dada art.

The moment

Hours spent pounding the cobblestones have left you in desperate need of some TLC. Thankfully, Las Alcobas maintains a staff of superheroes in “Personal Host” form. You quickly alert them that you’d like a bath drawn, and momentarily find your tub worthy of a queen, complete with your bath oil of choice. Bliss.
