A perfectly modernized legend.
Cramped. Too often, centuries-old Grand Dame hotel rooms feel tight; here, they’re spacious enough to make you want to move in permanently.
You won’t find any evidence of Anantara Palais Hansen’s former lives—as a police headquarters, or a health department clinic visited by ladies of the night—when you check into one of the 152 recently revamped (and thoroughly modern) rooms at the Anantara Palais Hansen. It may have been built in 1873 to pamper visitors to that year’s World Exhibition, but any vestiges of the past are replaced by vestiges of the now, such as an 8,600-square-foot spa—complete with a pool, a rarity in the city—and a sweet-smelling Cigar Bar where you can puff on Cubans with names like “Punch Punch.” Rooms are also surprisingly au courant, with heated tile floors and rain showers in the bath and soundproof doors and windows.
They’ve perfected modernizing a historic legend—no easy feat. Also: their smoked Käsekrainer sausage is off-the-charts köstlich (delicious).
After a day of wandering the manicured grounds of Schoenbrunn Palace, you decide it’s high time you gave yourself the royal treatment: a full-body rub-down with warm, nutrient-dense mud from across the border in Hungary.
