But it’s the opposite, and perfectly suited to Tokyo’s fetish for craftsmanship: a ryokan-calm hideaway of blond woods, washi paper screens and floor-to-ceiling glass for surveying the cityscape. Starting guest rooms are the largest in Tokyo—746 square feet. The spa is, expectedly, a standout: Try the acupressure facial before slipping into the mirror-like 98-foot-long pool overlooking the city.

Unlike many other options in Tokyo, it feels thoroughly of its place. Note the zen rock garden in the soaring lobby, and tailor-made experiences like samurai etiquette courses.

As sun falls over Mount Fuji, the Restaurant by Aman is cast in surreal pink glow—just as a waiter presents a plate of roasted local venison with chestnuts and truffles. Who needs rose-colored glasses?
